MAY 2003

Chairman’s Letter

Firstly a warm welcome to the residents of Tilstone Fearnall. The new Parish Council will be known as Tiverton and Tilstone Fearnall Parish Council with effect from May 1, 2003. Unfortunately no nominations were received in time for the May elections for the new Parish Council seat to represent Tilstone Fearnall, so the Tiverton Parish Council members will represent that Parish until an appropriate candidate is forthcoming. The Clerk to the Parish Council will furnish details of nominations on request.

Following our repeated lobbying and representations, the Highways Department have now installed the revised and new road signs that we requested, and have reinstalled the antiskid surface under the railway bridge, and have replaced the over-height signs. We still await their investigations regarding the widening of the A49 at the junction with Huxley Lane, to give some protection to vehicles turning into the village. The road markings on the A51 at the Red Fox corner are still outstanding and we continue to press for alterations to be carried out, together with a pedestrian phase to the traffic signals.

In spite of our continual reminders to Power Systems there is still remedial work to be carried out to the verges and grassed areas, and for the poles to be cleared of redundant accessories. This is in spite of our letters of complaint and their non-attendance at scheduled meetings. This is a very unsatisfactory situation and we will continue to press them until we are satisfied.

It has been noticed that some vehicles are being parked on the grass verges in the village, and in consequence some of the grass is becoming rutted and giving an unkempt appearance, we would ask you to make every endeavor to stop this practice.

We must applaud the efforts being made by residents to keep the roadsides throughout the village area free of litter, that includes Cribb Lane and Pudding Lane, and for cutting back the hedge leading down to Beeston Brook and for the ladies who have trimmed the pavement edge at the western end of Huxley Lane. Well done.

If you notice any large items of litter dumped on the roadside, please ring Chester City Council’s Street Cleansing Department on 01244 402477, and they will deal with it very quickly. The Fire Brigade have asked us to report any abandoned vehicles to the same telephone number as there is a danger of fire.

This is my last Chairman’s Newsletter, as a new Chairman will be appointed in rotation at the AGM. Thank you for your support, believe me the job is no sinecure.

Derek Marshall, Chairman 732217.

Tiverton Village Fete

Following the village fun day for the Jubilee in 2002 it was generally agreed that we should make this a yearly event.  The team went into action some time ago and agreed a date of Saturday June 28th, which was also agreeable with the Hockey Club who has again offered their grounds and clubhouse facilities.  Last years event was entirely self funding so no charge is anticipated for entrance, but we will be selling “lucky” programmes again giving you all the details of the days events once these are finalised.  We will be calling at each house in the area and trust you will support us with your 50 pences.

Chris and Maggie Cox will be in charge of the sports again and will also liase with the hockey club.  Lots of fun for the children too with bouncy castles and fancy dress and a picnic later in the afternoon.  Wet weather arrangements will be made just in case but we have ordered fine weather for the day!

The very successful barbeque will again be in operation run by Diane and Rowena, and the tombola will be as good as last year at least if you are as generous as you were then.  Everything welcome large or small.  As the Marshall’s at The Quadrant opposite the Village Hall have volunteered to take on this task any items can be left there or at Audrey’s porch at 2 Castle View if more convenient.  We can also pick up when delivering event programmes.

We have again booked “The Kads” dance band for an evening dance and social in the Village Hall in the evening.  The landlord at The Beeston Castle is providing refreshments and drinks will be on a bring your own basis.  Tickets (over 16s) will be on sale with programmes at 3.50 each and limited in number.  Entrance will be by ticket only so do get your orders in for this popular event.

Tiverton & Tilstone Fearnall Parish Council

The Tiverton Annual Parish Meeting will take place at 7.30pm on Tuesday 13th May in the Village Hall, this is an opportunity for all residents within the Parish to raise any matters of interest, though arranged by the Parish Council this is not a Parish Council meeting.  It will be followed by the Parish Council Annual Meeting. Items on the agenda will include, election of Parish Council Chairman and Vice Chairman the approval of accounts for the year 2002 to 2003. The new Parish Council notice board has now been erected beside the telephone box. Here you will find posted the full agenda for the next meeting together with minutes from the previous meeting.

There will not be an election on May 1st since only the existing eight members of the Tiverton Parish Council (Roger Cheshire, Janice Farrall, Derek Marshall, Audrey Povall, Liz Scott, Andy Thorne, Dave Wake & Ann Wright) were nominated they automatically form the new Parish Council. Unfortunately no valid nomination forms were received on time for the representative for Tilstone Fearnall, therefore this place will be filled by co-option at the meeting of the new Parish Council on Tuesday 13th May.

Tiverton Toddlers

The next coffee morning for Mothers and Toddlers will be held at Clare Gregory’s house, Tiverton Hall on Monday 19th May at 9.30am –11.30am.  Please feel free to come along and get to know some other local Mums.  You can phone Clare on 732517.

Missing Dog

On 22nd April Alf went missing.  He is a 24 inch high Lurcher, a neutered male, 8 years old with brown eyes, grey rough coat with white blaze on chest.  He was wearing a greyhound type collar which has a deep cut in it together with a name disc.  If you have any information regarding Alf or other Lurchers who have gone missing please contact Dave Stubbs on 732631.

Guided Walks on Local Footpaths

Did you know that the parish of Tiverton encloses 1691 acres of land and 14 acres of water?  Within those 2.66 square miles lie 21 km of footpaths, most of which are in very good condition but receive very little publicity. After many months of negotiation, the Parish Council has recently secured funding from Leader+ to prepare a walks guide for the parish.  Work has started on the guide and publication is due for Aug/Sept.

To publicise the routes, there will be a series of guided walks on the following dates: Weds, 21 May; Weds, 4 June; Tues, 17 June and Tues, 8 July.  Meet at Smithy Green, junction of A49 and Huxley Lane (GR 553602) at 7:15pm
