TIVERTON PARISH NEWS - AUGUST 2002
Tiverton Parish Council has been in the past the body
considered by the Chester City Council as the appropriate Parish Council to
review statutory notices and planning applications for the Tilstone Fearnall
area, even though Tiverton do not receive any precept or funds in respect of
that district. Equally Tilstone Fearnall, as a body, has no Parish Council to
look after its affairs at City and County level or for consultation with the
Police and Fire and Ambulance services. Our City Councillors and the Parish
Council feel that the time has now arrived to come to a decision and to
regulate the situation. You will find inside this Newsletter a letter to all
residents of Tiverton explaining the alternatives, will you please let the
Clerk, Clare Gregory, have your views and please attend the special meeting, to
finalise Tiverton’s decision, to be held in the Village Hall on September 20th
at 7.30pm. A letter, similar to ours, will be delivered to the residents of
Tilstone Fearnall by the City councillors and a meeting will be held for
Tilstone Fearnall residents in the Church Hall on September 24th
2002. Let us hope that we will be able at last to resolve this issue.
The Parish Council have been concerned with the signage on
the A49 from the Red Fox to the Beeston Railway bridge, as we feel that many of
the signs and road markings are misleading or inappropriate and meetings have
been held with representatives from Cheshire County Council to attempt to
rectify what in many cases can be and are dangerous and potentially dangerous
situations. We await their solutions with great interest.
Whilst we are continually pressing the contractors and the
City and County authorities to improve upon the upkeep of the various greens in
the village I am sure that you will all agree that the entry greens to the
village off the A49 are showing remarkable improvement. Our thanks in this case
should go to the residents who ‘painfully’ raked and scarified the grass to
remove the years of neglect, and in particular to Roger Cheshire for mowing
those greens. Incidentally Manweb are being pressed for their timetable for the
completion of their cable undergrounding, and then on completion they will be expected
to restore the areas disturbed by their works.
David Wake of Fir Tree Farm was co-opted onto the Parish
Council at the meeting held on July 23 2002. Welcome to David, and I am pleased
to say that we have now a full complement of councillors.

Tiverton Golf Club
Perhaps it is not generally known that there was once a
nine hole golf course at Beeston Brook.
At the turn of the last century it was decided to build such a course,
the area chosen was set within the boundries of the Shropshire Union Canal,
Bank Farm, Tiverton and Tilstone Bank Farm.
In the spring of 1905 the course was ready, a young golf
professional from Heswall, Peter Holmes, was engaged and the Grand Opening
Ceremony was performed by Lord Tollemarche.
In spite of being such a hilly course the club prospered until the start
of the 1914 – 1918 war when most members and Peter joined the forces and the
course was allowed to revert to pasture.
Peter lodged with a family at Bank View, Beeston Brook, and
on his return from the forces set up a thriving antique furniture business,
having in the meantime married the daughter of the house. Mrs Holmes had a very popular café right
against the railway bridge. In the mid
1920s they had a daughter Peggy, who actually still lives at Beeston Brook, and
to whom many thanks for verifying these notes.

No doubt you
have read in the Chronicle the fiasco about the holiday won by us at the
Bunbury Legion Jubilee Garden Party. As
a direct resultof a great deal of unpleasantness when the result was announced
(if you haven’t heard the story ask your friends!) we immediately decided to
hand back the prize to The Bunbury Legion to be raffled again for the Legion
funds. Tickets will be on sale for £1 at any
time, including Tiverton Garden Club events or from the treasurer Tony
Harbottle. In Bunbury the Chairman of
the Bunbury Garden Club (and also a Legion member) Roger Fairweather will be
pleased to take your money.
The Prize is a
weekend for two in Bruges on a date of the winner’s choosing, and the winning
ticket will be drawn on September 14th at the Bunbury Garden Club
Show. This is a good cause please
support it. We can assure you there
will only be one winner and we will definitely not be participating thank you!! We daren’t take the chance of it happening
again!!!
