Parish Council Newsletter
Chairman’s Letter
I mentioned in the last newsletter the
re-opening of the shop opposite the Beeston Castle Hotel. I am glad to say that
they are receiving support from many quarters. They are expanding the range of
goods available and you can now buy fresh meat and pies supplied by John
Sambrook. It is now stocked as a mini-supermarket and I would ask
everybody to use it. It is all part of giving our villages a heart and a
sense of community rather than becoming a dormitory where nobody speaks to each
other. We are also investigating the provision of a Post Office and your views
on that or any other issues will receive full consideration.
I was recently alerted to a potential
problem in the area of Foxy Wood where Network Rail are putting in a temporary
roadway to enable them to reinforce the rail embankment which is in danger
of subsidence due to badger setts. I have met with the contractors who have
shown me their Environmental Policy and Operating Documents, which are very
comprehensive. They have a Wildlife Officer full time on site who is
temporarily moving badgers and they are taking steps to protect the orchids and
other wild plants in the working area. If they are as good as their word it is
good to see this consideration for the environment. The Environment Agency
are also monitoring the work.
One request from parish residents is to please be considerate when having garden fires and make sure you only do so when the wind takes the smoke away from your neighbours.
On a lighter note I have
"relocated" the mole who was landscaping the village green but I am
sure it wont be long before his neighbours move in!

Chairman
Pensions Service Seminar
As
noted in the last newsletter, the Parish Council has arranged a “Pensions
Service” seminar to be held on Tuesday 21st October at 2pm in
Tiverton Village Hall. The new Pensions
Credit will be discussed, as will other matters arising regarding your rights
as pensioners. Please don’t feel this
does not apply to you. You may be
pleasantly surprised at just what help is available. There will be lots of opportunities for questions or informal
chats and home visits can be arranged if necessary. You have nothing to lose by attending.
At
the same meeting Graham Marsden of crime prevention and homewatch fame will be
advising on safety precautions and new ways to combat crime around your
home. Well worth hearing with winter
just around the corner.
