A traffic survey in Tiverton in July 2000 indicated that the average speed through the village is between 30 and 35mph, and a quarter of the traffic passing through the village drives in excess of 40mph!

More details will be published in the next edition.

Tiverton Homewatch

We have had only a few incidents in the village since our last report, the most serious being the apparent theft of heating oil from a domestic tank. Other happenings include the taking of some garden equipment, fortunately found abandoned nearby.

In neighbouring areas, a Royal Mail post box has been stolen from Tilston Bank, an armed robbery took place in Newton, and a suspicious door to door caller caused concern in Alpraham. This caller appeared during the evening and stated that they were doing a survey of TV sets in use. The target house is occupied by an elderly couple, The details given to the police were enough for them to take an interest and to keep a watch for the persons and a vehicle that was seen in the vicinity. The Tiverton Homewatch notified Chester Division of the police at Dragon Hall, who are also keeping a look out.

In December, The Blue Lamp Campaign received reports from the three divisional police commanders in the area around Tarporley. They have recognised the local villages’ concerns on the lack of visible policing and have put the following into effect.

·              Crewe and Nantwich. The immediate introduction of a mobile police station calling on the rural communities in that area, Bunbury, Spurstow, Alpraham etc.

·              Vale Royal and Congleton. The division has successfully bid for a mobile police station. Currently, the division currently does not have a rural police force.

·              Chester Division, which covers Tiverton. The division has two rural police stations, Dragon Hall and Mickle Trafford, and has a rural policing sector of an Inspector, a Sergeant and 15 police officers. The sector operates from 7.a.m. to 4.a.m. seven days per week. P.C. Ray Stockton is our beat officer, and he is stationed at Dragon Hall.

Currently each division operates its radios on different frequencies, which is of particular interest to Tiverton as we live at the border of the three police divisions, but when the new deployment centre is on stream in 2003 a common frequency will operate over all divisions. Then the nearest officer to an incident will be deployed regardless of the division. This will be a great improvement on the current situation.

We are now coming up to Spring, so be very careful about storing garden tools out of sight and in locked accommodation. The longer days will also mean more door-to-door callers. Be aware and report anything suspicious to Dragon Hall tel. 771293.  If no one is available your call will automatically be diverted to Chester Police Station’s control room. Don’t think that the matter is too trivial, report it!

The Canal at Beeston Brook

The Iron Lock, designed by Thomas Telford, was installed in 1828.  It was a replacement for the original stone-built lock that had collapsed some years earlier due to running sand in the strata beneath.  In early summer last year it was noticed that distortion had taken place in one side of the lock and two of the longer narrow boats could not share.  As a precaution, it was decided to limit all boats to a single passage and to carry out an inspection in the quieter winter months.

In January, barrages were placed above and below the lock, and a team of British Waterways engineers including divers made a thorough examination.  Some repairs were carried out and the canal re-opened.

In February, the canal was completely closed from above the Stone Lock to Beeston Wharf, while more permanent repairs and replacements take place.  This is expected to take about a month
